EDMONTON RACE DATES
EDMONTON, AB (January 7) - The holidays are over and the calendar has been flipped to 2015 which only means the upcoming race season is getting closer.  "With a foot of snow on the ground it's pretty difficult to talk racing right now," admits Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig, "but the reality is, in about a hundred days, many NPP Series teams will be test 'n' tuning their race cars in Edmonton."  NPP Late Model Series officials hope to have a tentative 2015 race schedule available later this month.  "It's (the schedule) like putting a puzzle together.  The good news is that we've got our Edmonton dates on paper.  Now the shuffling begins with available race dates at other tracks we hope to compete at this year."

The NPP Late Model Series celebrates its 15th consecutive race season in 2015.  Castrol Raceway celebrates its 25th consecutive season of Oval racing in 2015.  "I'm sure track officials in Edmonton have huge plans for this significant milestone."  Right now the NPP Late Model Series has seven tentative dates booked at Castrol Raceway for the 2015 race season.  "We've tentatively booked our season opener for Edmonton on Saturday, May 23rd."  Sangudo Speedway (Sangudo, Alberta), Central Alberta Raceways (Rimbey, Alberta), Dinosaur Downs Speedway (Drumheller, Alberta) and Merritt Speedway (Merritt, British Columbia) have all expressed interest in hosting a NPP Late Model Series points event in 2015.

RACE DATE CHANGES FOR EDMONTON
EDMONTON, AB (January 9) - Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series officials and race teams have found out first hand why it's called a tentative schedule.  Castrol Raceway officials indicated that several schedule 'adjustments' needed to be made.  The 2015 Gold Cup and the 2015 Extreme Cup events, both featuring open wheel sprint cars, have had their race dates changed.  The NPP Late Model Series was scheduled to compete at both events. Originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday July 24th and 25th, the 2015 Gold Cup will now be run on July 3rd and 4th (Fri & Sat).  The 2015 Extreme Cup, originally scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 4th and 5th, has been moved to August 21st and 22nd (Fri & Sat).  NPP Series announcer Gord Craig says the Gold Cup schedule change is an easy adjustment but the Extreme Cup schedule change is a little bit harder to take.

"It looks like we will probably lose two Edmonton appearances because of the change to the Extreme Cup race dates."  NPP Series officials were looking at racing at Central Alberta Raceways on August 21st and 22nd.  No explanation was giving for moving the Extreme Cup event but track officials had a good reason for moving the Gold Cup race. "Apparently there was a conflict with a major sprint car show at Skagit Speedway in Washington State, track officials were worried this would affect the car count."  Car counts at recent Gold Cup events in Edmonton have struggled.  The Gold Cup was first run in Edmonton (Speedway Park) back in 1954.  Castrol Raceway started running the Gold Cup in 1991.

2012, 2013 GOLD CUP CHAMPION TRAVIS RILAT FROM FORNEY, TEXAS

"The NPP Late Model has been the support class to the Sprint Cars at the Gold Cup in Edmonton since 1999."  More NPP Series race dates will be released in the coming weeks.  Sangudo Speedway (Sangudo, Alberta), Central Alberta Raceways (Rimbey, Alberta), Dinosaur Downs Speedway (Drumheller, Alberta) and Merritt Speedway (Merritt, British Columbia) have all expressed interest in hosting a NPP Late Model Series points event in 2015.

OFF-SEASON DRAGS ON
EDMONTON, AB (January 13) - The halfway point of the long off-season passed without major fanfare on Monday, January 12th.  Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig says the hard part is over.  "It's now less than 110 days till test 'n' tune in Edmonton.  It sounds like a long time but if you think about it, the month of February is just two weeks away.  It's officially spring  in about 60 days."  NPP Series officials continue working on the 2015 tentative schedule and hope to have a completed schedule released by the end of the month.  "Back in November we submitted our race date request list [to Edmonton track officials].  We were hoping to have at least one appearance a month in Edmonton for the 2015 race season."

OFF-SEASON VISIT TO SNOWY CASTROL RACEWAY ON JANUARY 13TH, 2015

Edmonton's Castrol Raceway celebrates its 25th consecutive season of Oval racing in 2015.  The NPP Late Model made its debut in Edmonton at the 1999 Gold Cup as the support class to the open wheel Sprint Cars.  Craig indicates that the NPP Series will once again travel to several racetracks in 2015.  "We are a touring Series.  Central Alberta Raceways in Rimbey will see the NPP Series road show this year.  We hope to race at Sangudo Speedway this year as well."  Craig says Southern Alberta is back on the radar once again for 2015.  "We tried to schedule a race at Dinosaur Downs Speedway in Drumheller in 2014 but unfortunately the dates didn't work out.  The goal right now is to have a two-day points race in Southern Alberta this year."  The last time the NPP Late Model Series competed in Southern Alberta was September 3 & 4, 2011 at Bridge County Raceway in Lethbridge.

LET THE RECORDS SHOW
EDMONTON, AB (January 31) - Western Canada's toughest racing Series on the dirt has updated its extensive library of race results and statistics.  "Two-years ago we launched our on-line stats and results section," exclaims Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig, "we've now expanded that section to include track-by-track statistics. We've also released a NPP Series records page and the drivers that hold these various records."  Since the first official season back in 2001, a total of 108 drivers have strapped themselves into a NPP Late Model and challenged for the checkered flag.  Craig says acknowledging all drivers is important.  "Whether a driver has competed in one or a one-hundred events, they are part of NPP Series history."

#3 KEVIN WHEELER & #81 DWIGHT KENNEDY HOLD SEVERAL NPP RECORDS

The NPP Series has competed at 12 different race venues since 2001.  "We have fond memories from all the tracks we've run at over the years.  We are also proud to keep alive [through our records]  the names of several race tracks that unfortunately have ceased operating."  With current NPP Series results and statistics (2001 - 2014) up to date, officials continue to search for pre-NPP Series results.  "This is going to be a little bit more tough," admits Craig, "the NPP Series has roots which date back to 1994.

NPP SERIES RACE RESULT ARCHIVES IN 'BOOK' FORM

Finding all the pre-NPP Series race results remains a work in progress."  The 15th consecutive season of race action from the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is still four months away.  The 2015 season opener is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 23rd at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.

CALIFORNIA CALLING
SIDNEY, BC (February 20) - As the 2015 season opener of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series continues to inch closer, Darrell Midgley will be waving the Canadian flag at the inaugural $150,000 Winter Showdown 250 in Bakersfield, California.  Over 60 teams have registered for this short track, pavement Super Late Model event scheduled for February 26th - 28th at Kern County Raceway Park.  Midgley will be behind the wheel of the Northern Provincial Pipelines/Alien Chassis #81 Dodge.

KERN COUNTY RACEWAY PARK OPENED IN 2013

"No guarantees for anyone," exclaims the 2009 NPP Series Champion, "everyone will have to race their way into the big race on Saturday night. Its going to be a tough deal thats for sure. If I make the show [Saturday night] it will be huge. This is a very high level event."  After single car qualifying Friday afternoon, three qualifier races will then be run under the lights.  "You can't focus too much on the big race," adds Midgley, "yes, running Saturday night is the ultimate goal but you have to get through Friday first. "

Ten drivers from each of the Friday night qualifier races will transfer to Saturday nights 250 lap/$25,000 to win event.  For non-qualifiers, a last chance race will be run Saturday afternoon of which only four cars will transfer.  "I don't think anybody wants to run this race," exclaims Midgley, "it's an extra race which will probably be a very rough one."  Earlier this month (February 6 -7) at Tuscon Speedway in Arizona, Midgley qualified 19th, finished 2nd in his Heat and finished 22nd in the Feature at the annual Chilly Willy 100.  "We were running 8th near the end and got taken out. I think we were probably a top 5 car at this race." Midgley says the race in Bakersfield will be exciting. "There are a lot of good teams, a lot of full-time teams down in the Southwest.  We will be seeing many of these same drivers and teams, that we raced against in Arizona, at the California race." Midgley indicates if the car 'survives' the Showdown event at Kern County Raceway he'll be competing at California's Irwindale Speedway on April 4th.

LUCKY 13 FOR MIDGLEY
SIDNEY, BC (March 5) - Darrell Midgley and his race team were all smiles as they returned home to British Columbia after a pretty decent race weekend in The Golden State. At the inaugural Winter Showdown 250 at Kern County Raceway Park, Midgley finished thirteenth in his Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd/Alien Chassis #81 Dodge.  Close to 60 pavement Late Model teams packed the pits at the Bakersfield, California race track from February 26th to March 1st. "The best of the best [in short track pavement racing] were there," acknowledges the Sidney, British Columbia driver, "we were pretty pleased with our performance.  I think we exceeded our expectations."  With only 36 cars scheduled to start the $25,000 to win event, Midgley admitted early on that making the big show would be extremely tough.  "We were right on the fringe for both of our practice sessons and for qualifying."  Midgley was 36th and 37th fastest in practice and qualified 34th.  "We pulled out a ninth place finish in our heat which locked us into the big show.  Just making it in was huge for us."

TAKING THE GREEN IN CALIFORNIA

Finishing 13th in the Winter Showdown was not without its challenges.  "At the halfway point of the race we narrowly missed a big crash.  The little bit of contact we had knocked out my rear brakes.  We ran the last half of the race with only front brakes."  Midgley, who was the only Canadian to transfer to the Showdown, also ended up being the top finishing car out of the Northwest.  "I'm pretty proud of my team for this."  Midgley will be back in California the first week of April to compete again.  "We are going to be at Irwindale Speedway on April 11th to race in the NASCAR K & N Pro Series."

FLEMING TO FLY AGAIN
ARDROSSAN, AB (March 20) - A simple phone call fourteen months ago may have planted the seed but it was his wife's encouragement and insistence that sprouted the deal.  Wade Fleming, the most dominating open wheel Sprint Car driver in Castrol Raceway history, is returning to the track for the first time since 2009.  Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd., title sponsor of the NPP Late Model Series, is proud to announce the return of the 8-time Castrol Raceway Sprint Car champion for the 2015 race season.  "I think it was over a year ago that Louie (Bossio) contacted me and said that 50 sure sounds better than 49."  What the owner of AMS Engines was referring to was the number of Feature wins Fleming has recorded in Edmonton.  "I kind of laughed it off," remembers Fleming, "I had no desire to go back racing at all.  I was done."  Fleming intentionally stayed away from visiting any tracks as a spectator during his time away.  "I have not been to any track (including Edmonton) since my last race."  Instead of watching others race, Fleming has been watching his four children grow up.  "They are all involved in sports (soccer, lacrosse, hockey).  It was a busy time for everyone.  It's still a busy time for everyone."  Back in February the desire of not wanting to return to the track took a surprising u-turn.  "We were all out for dinner and out of the blue my wife (Tracy) asked my kids what do you think about your dad going racing again?"  The feeling about 'dad' going back to the track was unanimous.  "I made a few phone calls and visits to some of my old sponsors that helped me win my championships.  I told them of my plans (possible return to racing) and that's all it took."

FLEMING TO FLY THE NPP FLAG IN '360' SPRINT CAR THIS SEASON

Joining Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd. on Flemings #7 Sprint Car once again are Boychuk Ventures, North American Diesel Performance and Northern Collision.  "There have been a few changes in sprint car technology but I'm not worried about getting behind the wheel again."  Fleming says the car is assembled and the engine is ready to go and that he is ready to go racing.  "I don't feel any different but I will get to see what's in the tank when I hit the track (in May).  I'm 46 right now.  The good news is that my driving suit still fits."  Keilyn, Paxton, Decklyn and Tristan, Flemings children (aged 12 - 18), are still involved in sports but will now help out at the race track this season.  "I almost have a full pit crew," laughs Fleming, "like me, they have grown-up with racing around them.  The first time I was at a race track was when I was six months old."  In his 19 seasons at Edmonton's Castrol Raceway, Fleming recorded 60 Heat race wins and leads all Sprint Car drivers with 49 Feature wins.  Fleming also grabbed 8 track championships.  "If anyone asks, it was mostly my wife's idea!"  If soccer practice does not interfere, Fleming is looking forward to being at the Castrol Raceway test 'n' tune on May 3rd.

NPP SERIES GOES HIGH-TECH
EDMONTON, AB (April 1) - Western Canada's toughest racing Series on the dirt is about to become the most technically advanced racing Series in the country after the acquisition of new electronic monitoring equipment.  German company Aschenbahn Robotics is providing 6 high-tech motorsport mannequins to the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series for the 2015 race season.  Company president Hans Bursheidt says the new technology works hand in hand with current technology already in use.  "Here in Germany and I know in your country, many tracks use a transponder system to measure lap times and speeds.  The drawback is that the transponder system transmits information [to a computer] only at the finish line."  Bursheidt says the new high-tech motorsport mannequins, placed around the track, monitors each competitors transponder signal more than a thousand-times a second, every single lap.

EXTRA EYES WILL MONITOR NPP SERIES RACE ACTION THIS SEASON

"The current transponder technology is actually hiding more information than it reveals.  These mannequins will now intercept and interpret the transponder signal non-stop."  The motorsport mannequins, which are also are equipped with speed sensing cameras and race car recognition software, will relay real-time information about each competitor to the flag stand.

RACE CAR RECOGNITION SOFTWARE INSTALLED

"These mannequins are equipped with adaptive learning technology.  After a few races they will be able to predict when a tire is going flat or when an engine is about to expire.  They will also be able to predict spins and crashes before they happen." Burscheidt says the new technology will be a huge assistance to race officials and that competitors will see an immediate benefit also.  "The computer instructs the flagman which drivers to send to the pits after the first few laps because it knows what's going to happen on the track before it even happens.  It's wonderful technology."

DOLLARS AND SENSE
EDMONTON, AB (April 2) - Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series race teams, along with race teams from other divisions, will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets when competing on Castrol Raceway's 3/8 mile oval track this season.  In a surprise announcement, track officials in Edmonton have boosted its back gate fees for drivers by 20%.  Car and driver admission for the 2015 season is now $60.00.  Crew admission rates were spared the increase and will remain at $20.00.  Although no time-line was given, Castrol Raceway officials indicate that some of the back gate fee increase will go towards major repairs to the oval track catch fencing.  A new speaker system will also be installed in the competitor pit area.  Track officials also announced that spectator restroom facilities in the main concourse will be upgraded.  Several years ago, spectators at Castrol Raceway saw oval admission prices jump by 33%.  Edmonton track officials call this latest increase a reflection on the new realities.  Those realities include price increases in materials, maintenance and labor, along with cost of facility improvements.

CALIFORNIA CALLING AGAIN
IRWINDALE, CA (April 9) - Coming off a strong 13th place finish at Kern County Raceway last month, Darrell Midgley and the Northern Provincial Pipelines Ltd. pavement Late Model race team are back in California once again.  Irwindale Speedway hosts the 2015 Spring Classic this weekend.  "We are going to be running the same car we raced at Bakersfield," says the Sidney, British Columbia driver, "sure hope to have the same success with it."  Midgley has already set his bar for the weekend.  "Unlike Bakersfield where we had hoped to just get into the big race [finished 13th], the goal this weekend is to be at least in the top10 here [Irwindale Speedway].  It's going to be tough as this is only the second time I've run here."

Midgley last competed at Irwindale Speedway in October of 2007.  Finishing 11th in the Last Chance race, Midgley did not transfer to the Feature event of the All-Star Showdown which was won by current NASCAR competitor Joey Logano.  "Darrell, Glen and Gord [my crew] are ready.  Time to go have some fun."  Irwindale Speedway is a 1/2 mile paved oval track located about 25 minutes from downtown Los Angeles.

SCHEDULE FINALIZED
EDMONTON, AB (April 16) - The 2015 race schedule of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series has been finalized.  "We were originally aiming for a 12 event season," says NPP Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig, "right now we have 9 confirmed dates."  Edmonton, Alberta's Castrol Raceway will host the NPP Late Model Series a total of five times in 2015.  Central Alberta Raceway's in Rimbey will see four appearances. "Our season opens up in Edmonton on May 23rd," says Craig, "this will be the seventeenth consecutive season that NPP Late Model action is scheduled for the Edmonton track."  The NPP Late Model made its Edmonton debut at the 1999 Gold Cup.  "We've been the support class at the Gold Cup open wheel Sprint Car event ever since and will be again this year."  The Gold Cup runs July 3rd and 4th.  The Race of Champions/Legends of NASCAR event returns to Edmonton for the third straight year in 2015.  "I can confirm that two-time Daytona 500 Champion Michael Waltrip is one of the drivers that will be back to compete in a NPP Late Model on Friday, July 24th."  Past NASCAR stars that have competed in the Race of Champions with the NPP Series include Sterling Marlin, Ken Schrader, Dave Blaney and Kenny Wallace.

NPP LATE MODEL RACING IN EDMONTON SINCE 1999

Central Alberta Raceway's will see four appearances by the NPP Late Model Series in 2015. "We have two, two-day shows scheduled for Rimbey this year including our season championship weekend on September 11th and 12th."  This is the second consecutive season that the NPP Series Champion weekend will be held in Rimbey, Alberta.  "There is always plenty of action when we race in Rimbey.  It certainly was a wild two-day championship weekend last year."

2 WEEKENDS / 4 RACES IN RIMBEY, ALBERTA THIS SEASON

The tentative race dates for the September long weekend at Bridge County Raceway in Lethbridge, Alberta have unfortunately been removed from the schedule.  "This easily is the biggest disappointment of the off-season," notes Craig, "things were looking good for a return to Southern Alberta. Positive news emerged regarding potential investors wanting to revitalize the racing scene in the Lethbridge area.  Here's hoping we'll still see something develop from this." Bridge County Raceway closed its doors at the end of the 2011 season.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS
WENATCHEE, WA. (April 23) - Coming off a third place finish at the 2015 Spring Classic at California's Irwindale Speedway earlier this month, Darrell Midgley hopes to carry the momentum into Washington State this weekend.  The Sidney, British Columbia driver figures he left a lot on the table at last year's spring race at the Wenatchee Super Oval.  "I know we had a top-five car here," exclaims Midgley, "unfortunately things just did not go our way.  We were in the top-ten in practice speeds but then went out and qualified 20th.  We dug ourselves a hole early [at last year's race] and then could not get out of it."

Midgley was credited with an 18th place finish in his Northern Provincial Pipelines/Alien Chassis #81 Dodge.  "We hope to redeem ourselves here this weekend."  The season opening weekend for Wenatchee Super Oval features the Leonard Evans Memorial 200 race on Sunday, April 26th.  "The big day is Sunday but we are going to take advantage of several practice sessions on Friday and Saturday." Wenatchee Super Oval is one of the tracks in the Tri-Track Super Late Model Series circuit. Ironically the Tri-Track Series will be competed at five venues in 2015. Yakima Speedway (Yakima, Washington), Evergreen Speedway (Monroe, Washington), Spokane County Super Oval (Spokane, Washington) and Stateline Speedway (Post Falls, Idaho) will also host TTS events in 2015. The 2015 season opener of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is May 23rd at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta.

MIDGLEY GRABS 11TH IN WASHINGTON
WENATCHEE, WA. (April 26) - "That was a fun weekend," exclaimed Darrell Midgley after climbing out of his Northern Provincial Pipelines/Alien Chassis #81 Dodge Sunday afternoon.  The Sidney, British Columbia driver finished 11th at the Leonard Evans Memorial 200 race at Wenatchee Super Oval in Washington.  "The car was pretty good in the first half of the race," says Midgley, "but during the mandatory stop [lap 100] at the halfway point we made some adjustments to the car and it was a bit of a handful for the last half."  Midgley finished four seconds behind eventual race winner Taylor Riddle of Yakima, Washington.  "We finished on the lead lap and get to drive the car on the hauler with no damage."  Midgley finished 18th at the 2014 spring race in Washington.  "We improved on our finish from last year.  It would have been nice if it was a top ten but overall  I'm very happy with the weekend."

Midgley, the 2009 NPP Late Model Series Champion has had a busy off-season racing his pavement Late Model south of the border.  He finished 22nd at the annual Chilly Willy 100 in Tuscon, Arizona back on February 7th.  On March 1st, Midgley grabbed a 13th place finish at the inaugural Winter Showdown 250 at Kern County Speedway in Bakersfield, California.  Midgley stood on the podium at California's Irwindale Speedway after a third place run at the 2015 Spring Classic on April 11th.  "I really want to thank Dwight Kennedy [at NPP] for sponsoring the car and allowing me to do this.  Can't wait to race him again in the NPP Series this year."  Midgley will be competing in several more pavement Late Model events over the coming months.  "Nothing really written down yet.  I know we will be racing at Western Speedway in Victoria a few times this year."  Next race event for Midgley won't be on the pavement.  It will be on the 'dirt' at Edmonton's Castrol Raceway on Saturday, May 23rd for the 2015 season opener of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series. Midgley finished 7th in NPP Series Championship points last season.

SIDENOTE: Leduc, Alberta' s Trevor Emond was also competing in Wenatchee, Washington on the weekend. The 3x NPP Series Champion finished 12th on Sunday. Emond last competed in a NPP Series race in 2012.

NOT 'ROC' SOLID
EDMONTON, AB (April 30) - The date was set however the complete driver line-up could not be solidified.  The Race of Champions/Stars of NASCAR event scheduled for Friday, July 24th at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton has been cancelled.  "I got the phone call this morning [Thursday]," exclaims Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig, "this has been a highlight event for the Series and for our race teams the past two seasons."

STOP WORK ORDER ON THE WALTRIP #55 FOR THE 2015 ROC IN EDMONTON

Two-time Daytona 500 Champion Michael Waltrip was one of the drivers planning a return visit to Edmonton as a NPP Series guest driver. "Michael really enjoyed his visits to Edmonton and was looking forward to racing here again this year."  The first two ROC/Stars of NASCAR events were held on a Wednesday night.  "Moving the race date from a Wednesday to a Friday night created some driver availability issues."  Kenny Schrader, who won the first two ROC events in 2013 and 2014, was unavailable for this year's event.  "Kenny had an ARCA race scheduled for Indianapolis on July 24th.  He was extremely disappointed that he would not be able to race with us this year."

WALLACE AND SCHRADER BATTLE AT 2014 ROC EVENT

Kenny Wallace, Sterling Marlin and Dave Blaney have also competed in the previous ROC events at Castrol Raceway.  "Kenny Wallace, who finished third at last year's event, is working more NASCAR events in the broadcast booth for FOX Sports. A weekend appearance from him was impossible."  The cancelled July 24th race date in Edmonton leaves a gaping hole in the middle of the 2015 race season for NPP Series drivers.  "We are working on filling this gap," says Craig, "we'll figure something out."
