HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM THE
NORTHERN PROVINCIAL PIPELINES LATE MODEL SERIES

SCHEDULE SNEAK PEAK
EDMONTON, AB (January 13) - The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series has released its tentative schedule for the 2014 race season.  "This is not the finalized schedule," admits NPP Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig, "but it's very close.  There could be some dates added but I'm betting we'll have some some date deletions before all is said and done." If the weather cooperates, the NPP Late Model Series will see its season begin at Castrol Raceway on Saturday, May 10th.  "This will be the fifth consecutive season that Edmonton race fans will be watching the first race event of the NPP Series Season Championship points chase."

One of the big holes to fill are race dates for Southern Alberta.  "The closure of Bridge County Raceway (after 2011 season) was a kick to the gut," sighs Craig, "the track is still for sale and I have heard absolutely nothing new regarding prospective buyers of this facility."  Dinosaur Downs Speedway has done its best in picking up the slack after the closure of the Lethbridge track but its only able to run a handful of races a season due to limited resources.  "We tried to race there (Drumheller, Alberta) last year but the Southern Alberta floods wiped out our weekend."  Dinosaur Downs Raceway also saw a significant management shakeup after their season wrapped up.  "This track has a lot of potential.  If it works out, we hope to run the Canada Day long weekend in Drumheller this season."

BANG THE DRUM IN 2014??

The month of August sees the annual Gold Cup event and the second annual Race of Champions on the 2014 schedule in Edmonton.  "What more can be said about the inaugural Race of Champions event.  It easily was the highlight of last season.  As of right now it's back again for this season."  Last year's Race of Champions event featured NASCAR drivers Michael Waltrip, Ken Schrader, Dave Blaney and Sterling Marlin in the NPP Late Model Series driver lineup.  "This year's Race of Champions will be held on Wednesday, July 30th.  At this point we are not at liberty to say who's going to be getting behind the wheel of a NPP Late Model."

For the past two seasons the NPP Late Model Series has crowned its champion at Flatlanders Speedway in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.  In 2014,  NPP Late Model Series officials are leaning towards having Central Alberta Raceways in Rimbey, Alberta host the season championship event for the first time. There is also a slim chance that Merritt Speedway in Merrit, British Columbia could play host to the final race weekend of the season for NPP Late Model Series race teams.

KENNINGTON IN ARIZONA
AVONDALE, AZ (February 28) - Canada's DJ Kennington was all smiles at Phoenix International Raceway Thursday night after driving the Northern Provincial Pipelines/Clark Construction #81 Dodge to a top-five finish. Thanks to a late race charge, the St. Thomas, Ontario driver finished fifth at the 2014 season opening race of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. "We were running ninth [in this race] for the longest time," exclaims the two-time NASCAR Canadian Tire Series Champion, "we avoided a couple of early wrecks, fought hard and in the end grabbed our best ever finish here." His previous best in Phoenix was seventh at the 2013 season opening race. Kennington qualifyied twelfth fastest out of twenty-nine entrants for this year's race.

"The car was strong in practice, qualifying and the race. This [top five] feels pretty good right now. It's a good start to our season." Kennington won't be running the full K&N season because of full-time commitments to the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series. "We finished second in points last year. Looking forward to the start of the season in Canada in May."

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE TWEAKS
EDMONTON, AB (March 20) - The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is one step closer to finalizing its 2014 race schedule.   "A majority of our race dates are now finalized," says NPP Series announcer Gord Craig, "but our long weekend race dates are still written in pencil." Craig indicates that some major tweaks have been made since the first release of the 2014 NPP Series tentative schedule back in January.  "The last two seasons, the NPP Series champion has been crowned at Flatlanders Speedway in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.  That won't be happening in 2014."  For the first time, Central Alberta Raceways will host the season championship weekend for the NPP Late Model Series.  "Actually there will be two Alberta racing Series crowning their champions on the September 20th and 21st weekend."  The NPP Late Model Series will be joined by the Xtreme Sprint Car Series at the Rimbey, Alberta race track.

"This facility has come a long way since opening its doors in 2005.  Attracting two of the top racing divisions in Alberta says a lot about this facility and the people that run it."  Right now the Canada Day and the Labor Day long weekend race dates remain big question marks for NPP Late Model Series schedule organizers. Also in question is the potential for a return visit to Merritt Speedway in British Columbia on the October long weekend.

OVAL TRACK AT CASTROL RACEWAY ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 19TH

"We're a month and a half away till the start of the race season. Its urgent that these particular race weekends be confirmed."  Craig indicates that NPP Late Model Series race cars could be on the race track in less than forty days if weather conditions permit.  "Edmonton has scheduled an Oval test 'n' tune for the afternoon of Saturday, April 26th."

RACE DATES POINTS RACE
EDMONTON, AB
(April 3) - The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series has finalized its 2014 race schedule.  NPP Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig says the schedule looks nothing like the tentative schedule released back in January.  "The plan was to race in three provinces this year like we did back in 2012 but after consulting with several drivers, the major road trips that our Series has been known for since 2008 are being put on hold.  All of our scheduled events will be in the province of Alberta this season."

Since 2001, the NPP Late Model Series has competed at twelve different racing venues in three provinces and one US State.  "The economy is booming in Alberta right now," says Craig, "a majority of our drivers are business owners.  With the booming economy comes staff shortage issues.  Several of our drivers have indicated that closing the doors to their businesses on a Friday [no back-up staff] to go on a major racing road trip is not feasible."  Last years NPP Late Model Series Rookie of the Year is one driver that is giving the 2014 schedule a big thumbs up.  "I've been going flat out the last month and a half," says Whitecourt, Alberta's Wayne Wheeler, "when I saw the tentative schedule a few months ago I had already counted out competing at several of the events due to travel. Business is business."  Wheeler owns Whitecourt Auto Sales, one of the top independent car, truck and RV dealerships in the region.  "These next few months are the bread and butter months for me." Wheeler says a race schedule with less travel will be beneficial for everyone this year.  "Racing is supposed to be fun.  We had a blast in this Series last year. I'm really looking forward to kicking off the season in Edmonton next month."

At the same time the NPP Late Model Series released its finalized schedule,  it also announced an adjustment to its Season Championship points structure.  "This is only the third time in NPP Series history that we've changed our points format."  Craig says that points earned for the Qualifying Heats and Dashes remain unchanged but how the Feature points are awarded has been dramatically adjusted.

..................................................................................................................(PHOTO: STP RACING MEMORIES)

"We've taken the old Feature points format and thrown it out the window."  Total points earned in a NPP Feature event have been reduced.  The spread in points between finishing positions have also been altered.  "It's a bit of a give and take scenario," adds Craig, "the biggest change would probably be the points gap between first and second.  This has been cut in half."  Despite the overall reduction in points awarded to drivers in the Feature, Craig says there will be a new way for drivers to earn bonus points in the Feature.  "This is right out of the NASCAR rule book.  NPP Series drivers will now earn a bonus point for leading a lap in the Feature and another bonus point for leading the most laps in the Feature."  The major change to the NPP Late Model Series points structure will see an immediate effect after the season opener in Edmonton next month. "We've had some extremely close championship points battles over the years. It wouldn't surprise me to see this years championship decided by less than 5 points."

ONE MONTH TILL VROOM
EDMONTON, AB (April 10) - The 2014 race season of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is less than a month away.  For the fifth consecutive year, Castrol Raceway will host the season opening points race of the NPP Late Model Series.  NPP Series announcer Gord Craig is looking forward to the drop of the green flag on May 10th.  "This is the sixteenth consecutive season that we have scheduled race events in Edmonton.  This will be the ninth time we've held our season opening race in the big city."

Only two other race classes have had longer consecutive appearance streaks at Castrol Raceway.  "The open wheel '360' Sprint Cars have competed in Edmonton since the track opened in 1991.  The Sportsman Sprint cars [Extreme Sprint Series] are celebrating their twentieth consecutive race season in Edmonton this year."  The NPP Late Model made its Edmonton debut in the summer of 1999.  Central Alberta Raceways in Rimbey, where the NPP Series will crown its champion in September, celebrates the 10th anniversary of their oval track in 2014.  "The NPP Late Model Series was the first race class to compete on their oval track back in 2005.  We are competing in Rimbey three-times this year including our Season Championship race weekend in September."

RACING IN RIMBEY SINCE 2005

The NPP Late Model Series also returns to Sangudo Speedway for a two-day show on the Canada Day long weekend. If the weather permits, NPP Late Model Series drivers could be on the track the end of April. Castrol Raceway has an 'open' test 'n' tune scheduled for Saturday, April 26th.

MIDGLEY MOTORS
SIDNEY, BC (April 21) -  The clock continues its countdown toward the start of the 2014 Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series race season.  For one NPP Late Model Series competitor however, his motorsports season begins this weekend.  Darrell Midgley, the 2009 NPP Series Champion, is competing in the Apple Blossom 125 Super Late Model event at the Wenatchee Super Oval in Washington State.  "This is only the second time that I will have raced there," explains the Sidney, British Columbia driver regarding the Saturday, April 26th event, "I ran in Wenatchee back in the early 1990's.  I can't remember how I did but I know I didn't win."  The Apple Blossom 125 is race number two of the twelve event, Tri-Track Super Late Model Series. The Tri-Track Series also runs at Yakima Speedway in Washington State and Hermiston Super Oval in Oregon.  "We missed the season opener at Yakima Speedway [April 11th]," admits Midgley, "but we didn't plan on running the entire Tri-Track season due to our racing commitments elsewhere this summer [NPP Series/Western Speedway]."

Pre-registration shows a healthy car count of about 30 Super Late Models for the Wenatchee race. "Some good drivers will be there that's for sure.  We raced against many of them in Las Vegas last October."  Midgley will be running the same car that he competed in at last year's Las Vegas race.  "It's a pretty good race car.  Our team hopes to be near the front this weekend south of the border."  Along with select pavement appearances in the United States this year, Midgley will also be competing in his pavement late model at his home track of Western Speedway in Victoria, British Columbia where he is also the track promoter.  "It's another busy year of racing!" Midgley also expects to run a good portion of his season on the 'dirt' in the Alberta based NPP Late Model Series.

MIDGLEY MOTORS 2
WENATCHEE, WA (April 27) - Darrell Midgley opened up his race season south of the border on the pavement at the Wenatchee Super Oval in Washington State.  The Apple Blossom 125 race weekend started off strong for the Sidney, British Columbia driver and his Northern Provincial Pipelines #81 Dodge.  "We were in the top-ten in practice on Friday," exclaims Midgley, "the car ran very, very well."  Unfortunately for Midgley, his practice times from Friday did not carry over to race day Saturday.  "It went downhill real fast," sighs Midgley, "we chose not to scrub our tires for qualifying.  That was a huge mistake on our part."  Midgley went from one of the fastest cars in practice to one of the slower cars on the track for qualifying.  "We ended up qualifying 20th and started near the back of the pack."

At the drop of the green Midgley would see the return of some of the fast laps that he recorded in practice.  "We moved up a few spots in the opening laps but then got spun [lap 10]."  This would be the first yellow flag of what would later turn into a crash filled race.  "The car suffered no real damage from the spin but it wouldn't start right away.  Very frustrating trying to get the car started and watching the entire field of cars drive by.  I went down two laps just like that.  It is almost impossible to gain those laps back."  Despite this early setback, Midgley ventured forward.  "That's all you can do.  Try to gain as many spots as you can."  Midgley would run as high as 17th at the midway point of the race, but was still two laps down.  "Then the crash fest began," laughs Midgley, " you get closer to the end of the race and people start taking chances."  Two separate red flags were flown [Lap 73 and Lap 82], stopping race action due to the carnage and debris on the track.  "It was at this point I decided that there is no need to destroy a good car.  We weren't going to finish any higher."  Midgley would pull into the pits and save his car to race another day.  "This was a good car.  I know we had a top-five car here.  Unfortunately we just dug a hole too deep to get out of." Midgley would be credited with a 18th place finish in Washington. Brent Harris from Wenatchee, Washington would grab the checkered flag at his home track.
