FILLING IN THE BLANKS
EDMONTON, AB (January 4) – Officials with the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series continue to work on finalizing the 2010 schedule.  “The race dates in Edmonton are pretty well set in stone,” indicates NPP Series media relations director Gord Craig, “we are still trying to secure race dates for two long weekends this summer.”  The NPP Series had hoped to compete at Bridge County Raceway in Lethbridge on the July 31st/August 1st long weekend but that won’t be happening now.  “We’d love to have the NPP Series here,” says BCR track manager Kathy Hadnagy, “however our track will be closed on this particular long weekend.  Most of our staff will be in Swift Current, Saskatchewan to assist with a major IMCA Modified race event.”  Ironically the NPP Late Model Series has been in contact with track officials at Speedy Creek Raceway in Swift Current regarding the possibility of a September long weekend race event.  “We’ve also talked with officials at the track in Outlook, Saskatchewan regarding the same weekend,” indicates Craig, “the NPP Series would definitely like to race in Saskatchewan in 2010.”  The NPP Late Model Series begins its 10th season of racing at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway on Saturday, May 8th. The first road trip of the season is the May long weekend at Bridge County Raceway in Lethbridge, Alberta.

BROUGHTON WINS BIG
EDMONTON, AB (January 28) – The old saying, you can’t win if you don’t enter is absolutely true. One Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series competitor has proof.  Edmonton, Alberta’s Brent Broughton won the grand prize of a trip for two to next months running of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Florida.  The Canada-wide NASCAR contest was through NewCap Radio.  “You had to pick 10 drivers each and every race,” indicates Broughton, “points were awarded for where the drivers finished.  In the end I was just fortunate enough to have the points needed to be the winner.”  The grand prize includes tickets, airfare and accommodations.  “It was very bizarre,” adds Broughton, “I got home from work (January 11th) and there were several e-mails and phone messages telling me I had won the grand prize.  I thought it was a joke at first cause I never win anything.”  Ironically, Broughton also won a $100 gift certificate one month into this same contest.

More that 40,000 radio listeners across Canada participated in the contest which was sponsored by Osman Auctions of Edmonton.  Brent has already chosen who will be accompanying him to the big race the second weekend of February.  “My niece Ashley has never been to a NASCAR race before.  It’s going to be a lot fun.”  Just a few days prior to Broughton’s big contest win, the Edmonton driver purchased tickets and airfare to the Las Vegas NASCAR race the end of February.  “I try to go to a least one spring NASCAR race,” indicates Broughton, “getting to go to two events before our race season starts is a pretty big bonus. I've never been to Daytona before. After this race its back home for a bit and then it’s off to Vegas.”  The 52nd running of the Daytona 500 which kicks of the 2010 NASCAR season is February 14th. The 2010 season of the NPP Late Model Series begins May 8th at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway.

MOTORSPORTS AND OLYMPICS

Olympic torchbearer Shaughn Butts and the NPP Series Pace Car

FAST TRACKING INDOORS
STONY PLAIN, AB (February 20) The sounds of racing filled East Parkland Bible Church in Stony Plain, Alberta Saturday afternoon.  Close to 150 people gathered to cheer on the 40 car field in the 12th annual AWANA* Grand Prix.  For the third year in a row Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series announcer Gord Craig provided the play by play for this indoor event.  “This is an incredible family event,” says Craig, “a lot of hard work and planning goes into this race.  It’s fun to be a part of it again this year.”  Hand-made wooden race cars (three classes) compete on a ramp style track which is divided into four lanes.

JUST A FEW OF THE RACE CARS IN THE AWANA PIT AREA

“Each car makes four passes down the track in each lane.  Points are awarded where you finished.”  After the heats are completed the top four cars (based on total points) transfer to the finals for another session of four races which determines the champion. Several tie breaking races had to be run this year.  “There were four cars tied for fourth in one of the classes, so this just added some extra excitement and drama this year.”

Daniel Buchner and Adam Klassen were the winners in the two children’s classes.  Edith Fehr won the leader’s category for the second year in a row.

CHANGE OF SEASONS
EDMONTON, AB. (March 20) – Welcome to spring!!  The big melt continues in the home province of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series.

THE MELT CONTINUES AT CASTROL RACEWAY (photo taken March 20th)

As 2010 race schedules are finalized at NPP Series race tracks, facility preparations are about to get underway at Castrol Raceway (Edmonton), Bridge County Raceway (Lethbridge) and Central Alberta Raceways (Rimbey).  The NPP Late Model Series continues preparation work for its 10th season of racing action. The 2010 season opener is scheduled for May 8th in Edmonton.

SPOILER ALERT
EDMONTON, AB. (April 1) – The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series will be sporting a new look for the 2010 season.  The rear spoiler, which has been a visual part of a NPP Late Model race car since 1998, is being replaced by a rear wing.  “When NASCAR revamped its race car design back in 2007 and went with a rear wing instead of a rear spoiler, it was well received by all drivers and fans,” indicates NPP Series announcer Gord Craig, “drivers and race fans here in Alberta are really going to love it too.  It’s not like we are changing the entire car, we are just changing the rear spoiler to a wing.”  The NPP Series was contacted in January by NASCAR race officials with an offer to purchase NASCAR rear wings in bulk.

“Many race fans say the NPP Series is like NASCAR racing on dirt so the opportunity to purchase genuine NASCAR rear wings for our race cars was too good to pass up.”  A total of 250 NASCAR rear wings were purchased (50 used - 200 new) for $125.  “It was almost like they were giving them away!”

WHEELER HAPPY TO SEE SPOILER GO

Whitecourt, Alberta’s Kevin Wheeler, one of the first NPP Series drivers to install the new rear wing on his race car, was impressed by its functionality.  “It’s a great place to put your beverage when you’re working on the race car at home.  You can’t do this with a spoiler.”

BROUGHTON GIVES THE WING A THUMBS UP

Benefits of the new rear wing were immediately seen by Spruce Grove, Alberta’s Bruce Broughton.  “It took me only 12 minutes to install this new wing compared to the 13 minutes that I needed to install the old style spoiler.  That was crazy.  This new wing is an absolute time saver.  It has allowed me to get to work sooner on other areas of the race car.”  Distribution of the new rear wing to NPP Series drivers is expected to wrap up later today (April Fools Day).  Test ‘n’ tune at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway is just 30 days away with the 2010 season opener on May 8th.

Other announcements made on this date:
1734 – Canada's first lighthouse began operating in Nova Scotia
1918 – Prohibition took effect in Alberta.
1949 – Tupperware was patented.
1960 – Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) began jet service between Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal.
1975 – Canadian radio stations started giving the temperature in Celcius.
1992 – NHL Hockey players went on strike for the very first time.
1999 Nunavut is established as a Canadian territory.
2010 – Happy April Fools Day!   The NPP Series is quite content with the rear spoiler.

SCHEDULE FINALIZED
EDMONTON, AB. (April 13) – The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series has finalized its schedule for the 2010 season.  Two race dates that were on hold for Southern Alberta on the September long weekend have now been removed.  NPP Series announcer Gord Craig says the current economic climate in Western Canada has a lot to do with how the schedule was drawn up this year.  “The economy is still in recovery mode here in Alberta. The NPP Series has adjusted to help out our teams by cutting back on travel and the number of race dates.”  Less is more in 2010.  The NPP Series has 14 race dates on its schedule this season and only two road trips.  “In past seasons we’ve had as many as 22 race dates on the schedule with half of those dates away from the home track (Castrol Raceway) in Edmonton.”  The NPP Late Model Series travels to Bridge County Raceway in Lethbridge on the May long weekend.  The only other road trip is a one day show in June at Central Alberta Raceways in Rimbey. The remainder of the race events will be campaigned at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton.  “Many of our teams have young families,” adds Craig, “I’m sure they won’t mind having a few extra weekends off this year.”  The 10th season of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series and the Chase for the Championship starts May 8th at Edmonton’s Castrol Raceway.

PIT STRATEGY
EDMONTON, AB. (April 21) – Some adjustments will have to be made by all Castrol Raceway competitors when they arrive at the track for the first time this May.  The home track of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series has reduced the size of the Oval pit area by about 20% to accommodate part of the brand new Mini-Sprint oval track which is currently under construction.

THE NEW MINI SPRINT CAR TRACK BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE

Parking space for race teams will be at a premium especially for many Late Model and Sprint Car race teams that use the larger haulers.

BIG RIG TRAFFIC JAMS POSSIBLE IN 2010

Including the NPP Late Model Series, five classes of race cars are scheduled to compete on the main Oval track most race nights this season.  Castrol Raceway officials are currently drawing up a revised pit parking strategy which is expected to be completed before test ‘n’ tune day on Saturday, May 1st.  A return to pitting inside the Oval track (1991 - 2008) has also been dismissed.

INNER GUARDRAIL, PIT FENCING AND CORNER FLAG STANDS REMOVED

Track crews have disassembled the inside retaining wall and taken down the inside catch fence to improve visibility for all drivers on the race track. The Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series celebrates its 10th consecutive season of racing action in 2010.  The NPP Series Championship Chase begins on May 8th.

SCHEDULE GLITCH!!
EDMONTON, AB. (April 27) – The home track of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series has altered its official 2010 Oval schedule.  Due to a scheduling conflict with Grays Harbor Raceway in Elma, Washington, Castrol Raceway has had to make quick adjustments to the race dates of Canada’s oldest Sprint Car event.

The 55th annual Gold Cup, which features Sprint Cars and the NPP Late Model Series, will now be run on Friday and Saturday July 9th and 10th instead of  July 16th and 17th.  The change in race dates accommodates the running of the 4th annual Fred Brownfield Memorial race featuring the Lucas Oil ASCS Sprint Car Series in Washington State (July 16th and 17th).  It is hoped the change in race dates will attract some ASCS Sprint Car competitors to Castrol Raceway for the Gold Cup weekend.  There will be no Oval racing on July 16th (Friday) at Castrol Raceway.  The July 17th race (Saturday) remains on the schedule.  Unfortunately thousands of Castrol Raceway posters and pocket schedules featuring the old race dates are already on the streets.  Castrol Raceway officials hope that word of mouth and racing websites, including the NPP Late Model Series site, will smooth the confusion caused by the last minute changes to Edmonton’s 2010 Oval race schedule.

TESTING….TESTING……
EDMONTON, AB. (April 30)
– Despite several days of rainy weather, the forecast for Saturday’s Oval test ‘n’ tune at Castrol Raceway looks promising.  Unless there is a major downpour of rain in the next 24 hours, the home track of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series is swinging open its doors for the first time this weekend.  Several NPP Series race teams (those that are ready) will be taking advantage of the pre-season test session to shake off the winter cobwebs.  Competitors from a total of five racing divisions are expected to be at the track Saturday afternoon.

PIT GATES: NOON
ON TRACK TEST SESSION: 2:00PM – 6:00PM

The 10th season of the Northern Provincial Pipelines Late Model Series begins May 8th at Castrol Raceway.
